MIC has retracted its application to join the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.

The decision was sighted in a letter to the Registrar of Societies signed by the party's secretary-general M Asojan Muniandy, citing Umno's decision to not join PN, reported Free Malaysia Today.

Earlier this week, MIC president SA Vigneswaran had said that it had joined PN because it assumed Umno would do so too.

However, on July 29, Umno said that it would not register with PN, and would focus on its pact with PAS under Muafakat Nasional (MN) instead.

Ciiting "confusion" on the matter, Astro Awani earlier this week quoted Vigneswaran saying: "Based on the earlier picture, there was assumption that Umno and BN will join PN after meeting Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin on July 1.

"Only after we sent in the letter to join PN did Umno say that it would not join PN," he was quoted.

He reiterated that MIC will continue to stand with BN, and added that the party has also sent in a letter to join Muafakat Nasional.

Last Sunday, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has confirmed that MIC was registered in PN, which is coalition comprising Bersatu, PAS and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR).
