A factory worker who caused an accident which killed a navy officer in Johor Bahru last Saturday, was today jailed for six years, and fined RM8,000, for driving under the influence of drugs.
Magistrate Suhaila Shafi'uddin passed the sentence on Nur Fatin Nazrah Suhaimi, 23, after the latter pleaded guilty to the charge.
The magistrate also ordered Nur Fatin to be jailed for an additional six months if she failed to pay the fine, and and barred her from renewing her driving licence for five years.
Besides, Nur Fatin was also ordered to pay an additional fine of RM2,800 after she pleaded guilty to three more charges - driving without licence, road tax and insurance. If she failed to pay the fine, she could be jailed for an additional six, four, and three months, respectively.
Nur Fatin, who appeared in court on a wheelchair, was also slapped with a seven month hail term in another court room, and ordered two undergo two years of surveillance order, for administering drugs into her body.
A dashcam footage depicting the horrendous accident at KM4 of the Johor Bahru-Kota Tinggi road at about 8.30am, went viral over the last weekend.
It shows a white-coloured Perodua Myvi, driven by Nur Fatin, barrelling down the road at high speed, before slamming into the right side of a white Honda Accord driven by navy officer Mohd Rizal Buseri, who was waiting at a traffic light.
The high-speed impact caused the Honda to turn turtle. Mohd Rizal was killed on the spot.
Another motorist, Chang Ah May, 78, sustained minor injuries in the incident, after her Proton Iswara was also involved in the collision.
Nur Fatin later tested positive for methamphetamine, and she was also found to be driving without a valid driving licence, and road tax and insurance, which had already expired.
Netizens were enraged after witnessing the dashcam footage, and demanded the driver to be punished accordingly.
