Penang folk, be prepared to pay way more than the current 20 sen for plastic bags in shopping malls, come 2023.

State environment committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the increase in the price of plastic bags to RM1 have been approved by the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry.

According to him, manufacturers and businesses will be given some time to adapt to the changes.

"Public awareness on the need to reduce the usage of plastic bags must be strengthened and the state government will carry out more dialogue sessions with manufacturers and shopping malls before implementing the policy.

“We will give them enough time to adjust and adapt to the changes and our goal is to implement it completely by 2023, ” The Star quoted him saying in his speech at the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) workshop on waste management in schools in Butterworth, Penang.

The move will pave the way to go from the "Go Green" initiative to stop giving them completely, he added.
