An incident at Sunway Lagoon in Subang Jaya over the weekend left 10 people with minor injuries after a roller coaster reportedly came to a sudden halt during a ride.
The incident occurred at around 9pm on Saturday (Aug 22), with videos of the stalled roller coaster subsequently circulating widely on social media. The footage showed passengers stranded on the track as emergency personnel worked to evacuate them safely.
Subang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azlan Wan Mamat confirmed that 10 people suffered minor injuries in the incident. The roller coaster was carrying 22 passengers at the time, comprising both Malaysians and foreign visitors aged between 11 and 44.
No fatalities or life-threatening injuries were reported.
As videos of the incident spread online, members of the public expressed concern over the safety of the passengers, with many relieved that the incident did not result in more serious consequences.
Following the incident, Sunway Theme Parks said it was working closely with the relevant authorities and fully cooperating with investigations to determine what happened.
“The safety and well-being of our guests are our highest priority. Since the incident, our main focus has been on the care, medical needs and well-being of those affected,” the company said in a statement.
Sunway Theme Parks added that the affected guests had been provided with the necessary medical assistance and support, while the company remained in contact with them and their families.
Sunway Group founder Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah also addressed the incident, expressing regret while noting that there had been no loss of life.
“We deeply regret the incident. We are fortunate that it did not involve any loss of life,” he said, as quoted by Harian Metro.
Cheah said a detailed investigation was underway to establish the exact cause of the incident, adding that authorities had ruled out sabotage or malicious elements.
The roller coaster at Sunway Lagoon stopped abruptly due to a sliding failure (kegagalan meluncur) says the Selangor occupational safety and health department (DOSH).
The authorities and Sunway Theme Parks are continuing to investigate the incident, with further findings expected to shed light on the cause of the ride’s sudden stoppage.
