Thailand will officially open its new permanent Sadao border checkpoint on Saturday, 11 July, replacing the existing Sadao crossing that connects with Malaysia's Bukit Kayu Hitam checkpoint in Kedah.
The move is expected to improve cross-border travel, facilitate trade, and strengthen economic ties between Malaysia and Thailand. According to Thai PBS World, Thailand's Cabinet approved the opening of the new checkpoint during its meeting on 7 July.
The new Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complex is located between boundary markers 23/9 and 23/10, replacing the current checkpoint situated between markers 22 and 23.
The upgraded facility will operate daily from 5.00am to 11.00pm (Thailand time) and will be directly connected to Malaysia's Bukit Kayu Hitam checkpoint, one of the busiest land border crossings between the two countries.
Thai authorities expect the new checkpoint to significantly improve traffic flow, reduce waiting times, and speed up immigration and customs clearance for travellers, commercial vehicles, and freight transport.
For Malaysians planning to drive into Thailand, the new Sadao checkpoint will now serve as the main entry point, offering a more efficient and streamlined border crossing experience.
