Looking for simple ways to keep your electricity bill under control? TNB recommends four practical steps that can help households monitor their usage, improve energy efficiency and make better use of available tariff options.
Here’s what you can do:
1. Keep track of your electricity usage
The myTNB app allows users to monitor their electricity consumption on a monthly basis. Customers with smart meters can also track their usage daily, making it easier to identify changes in consumption and adjust their habits accordingly.
2. Make energy efficiency a habit
Small changes at home can make a difference. Set your air conditioner between 24°C and 26°C and use a timer to avoid unnecessary usage.
When purchasing electrical appliances, consider choosing models with a 4- or 5-star energy efficiency rating, which can help reduce electricity consumption over time.
3. Consider switching to Time of Use (TOU)
Households can consider using electricity during off-peak periods under the Time of Use (TOU) tariff.
The off-peak period is from 10pm to 2pm on Mondays to Fridays, while weekends and public holidays are considered off-peak throughout the day.
Using more electricity during these periods may allow eligible users to enjoy lower tariff rates.
4. Consider installing rooftop solar
For households looking to invest in longer-term energy savings, rooftop solar is another option.
Under the Solar ATAP and SuRIA Home initiatives, eligible users can receive a rebate of up to RM3,000 for a 5kWac system, with an estimated payback period of around eight years.
With a few changes to how electricity is monitored and used, households can take greater control of their consumption while potentially reducing their monthly bills.
