For many university students, attending their convocation ceremony is the moment they have been looking forward to after years of hard work, sacrifices and determination.
But for 22-year-old Muhammad Nurhafiy Mohd Sazali, making it to the graduation stage meant so much more than receiving a certificate. It was a promise he had held close to his heart to present his achievement to the mother who had stood by him through one of the most difficult chapters of his life.
A student of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Muhammad Nurhafiy had to put many of his plans on hold after being diagnosed with blood cancer. Complications arising from his condition eventually led to the amputation of both his hands and feet.
Despite the challenges he has faced, his circumstances did not stop him from attending UiTM's 105th Convocation Ceremony (14th Session) at the Dewan Agung Tuanku Canselor (DATC), UiTM Shah Alam.
More importantly, he was there to receive the prestigious Vice-Chancellor's Award. UiTM Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Ts. Dr. Shahrin Sahib @ Sahibuddin shared the emotional story behind Muhammad Nurhafiy's attendance at the ceremony.
During an earlier visit, the young graduate had expressed his wish to attend the 105th convocation after missing the 104th ceremony, which he was originally supposed to attend. But there was one particularly meaningful reason behind his determination. He wanted to present the pink sash that comes with the Vice-Chancellor's Award to his mother.
“I still remember when I visited him, he made a request to attend the 105th convocation because he wanted to present the pink sash (Vice-Chancellor's Award) to his mother,” Professor Shahrin shared.

Thankfully, that wish became a reality.
“Alhamdulillah, Allah allowed Hafiy to give this pink sash to his mother. I cried at that moment too. My eyes were heavy looking at it, and my shoulders were even heavier carrying it.
“Congratulations, my son Hafiy. May God grant him complete health and allow him to continue pursuing knowledge,” he said.
For Muhammad Nurhafiy, the opportunity to receive his award at the ceremony was a moment he deeply appreciated. He expressed his gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and UiTM for making it possible for him to be part of the convocation celebration.
The occasion became even more special as he was accompanied by his younger brother, who had also completed his diploma studies and received the Vice-Chancellor's Award.
It was a proud family moment, with both brothers celebrating their academic achievements together despite the difficult circumstances they had faced.
Behind every achievement is often a family whose love and support help make the journey possible. For Muhammad Nurhafiy's mother, Huzaimah Berhan, seeing her son receive the award was undoubtedly a meaningful milestone.
She also expressed her hope that he would one day be able to continue his education at the bachelor's degree level, if circumstances allow.
Yet, Muhammad Nurhafiy's determination to attend his convocation shows that even when life takes an unexpected turn, the dreams we hold close can still give us something to look forward to.
And on this special day, his achievement was not just about an award or a graduation ceremony. It was about a son fulfilling a heartfelt wish and giving his mother another reason to be proud.
