For Malaysians who regularly collect medicines for long-term conditions, getting a repeat prescription may soon become much easier. The government has launched a fully subsidised Ubat Melalui Pos (UMP) service, allowing eligible patients to have certain long-term medicines delivered directly to their homes through PosLaju, without paying the usual delivery fee.
The service is expected to benefit more than 85,000 patients and will be fully subsidised for one year from October 1, 2026.
What is UMP?
Ubat Melalui Pos, or UMP, is a Ministry of Health service that delivers eligible repeat prescriptions to patients by post.
It is mainly intended for patients who regularly take medication for chronic conditions such as:
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Heart disease
Instead of travelling to a government health clinic or public hospital every time they need their repeat medication, eligible patients can have it delivered to their doorstep. The programme has been around since 2011, but this is the first time the government is fully covering the postal delivery cost.
How much does it cost?
Previously, patients had to pay between RM5.30 and RM12.50 for PosLaju delivery, depending on the location.
From October 1, 2026, the delivery fee will be fully subsidised by the government for eligible UMP patients. The government has allocated about RM5 million for the one-year initiative, which may be extended later.
Who can use UMP?
Not every patient or type of medicine is eligible. You generally need to meet these requirements:
- Have an active, long-term prescription
- The prescription must be issued by an MOH facility, such as a government hospital or Klinik Kesihatan
- Your condition and treatment must be considered stable by your attending MOH doctor or pharmacist
- The prescribed medicine must be suitable for postal delivery
What medicines can be delivered?
UMP is mainly for solid oral medicines such as tablets and capsules that do not require special storage or handling. However, some medicines cannot be sent through the service. These include:
- Medicines requiring refrigeration or cold-chain delivery
- Psychotropic medicines
- Liquid medicines requiring special handling
Patients will still need to collect these medicines in person.
How to apply for UMP online?
Eligible patients can apply through the official MyUBAT app. Here is the basic process:
1. Download and install the MyUBAT app.
2. Select new account registration.
3. Enter your full name, IC number, active phone number and email address.
4. Malaysian citizens may authenticate using MyDigital ID.
5. Once your account is registered, select "New Application".
6. Choose the UMP delivery option.
7. Submit your application for approval.
Do note that submitting an application does not automatically mean it will be approved. Eligibility will still be assessed by the relevant MOH facility.
Prefer to register in person?
You can also enrol directly at the pharmacy counter of the MOH clinic or hospital where you receive your treatment.
Bring:
- Your original prescription
- MyKad/IC
- Your physical appointment book or appointment card
Speak to the pharmacist, who can check your eligibility and assist with the registration.
However, the service is not intended for every type of prescription. Patients should check with their attending MOH doctor or pharmacist before relying on postal delivery for their next medication supply.
