After years of anticipation, WhatsApp has officially began rolling out one of its most requested features, usernames.
Although the feature will only become fully available later this year, users can now reserve their preferred username to secure the handle they want before the official launch.
The update marks a major shift in how people connect on the messaging platform, offering users greater privacy by allowing them to chat without sharing their personal phone numbers.
Until now, WhatsApp has relied entirely on mobile phone numbers as users' identities. This meant that anyone you wanted to message, whether for business, online shopping, community groups or networking would automatically gain access to your personal phone number.
With the introduction of usernames, users will soon be able to share a unique handle instead of their mobile number, similar to how people connect on platforms like Instagram or Telegram.
This feature is expected to be especially useful for:
- Joining community or public groups
- Buying and selling items online
- Networking at events
- Sharing your contact on social media
- Running a small business or creator account

WhatsApp says the new feature is designed with privacy in mind.
Unlike some social media platforms, there will not be a public username directory, search function or suggested usernames. This means someone must already know your exact username before they can start a conversation with you.
Users will also have the option to enable a username key for additional control over who can contact them.
Another key privacy feature is that when messaging business accounts, your phone number will remain hidden if you choose to use your username instead.
How to reserve your WhatsApp username?
First, make sure you're using the latest version of WhatsApp.
Then follow these steps:
- Open WhatsApp.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Account.
- Select Username.
- Choose and reserve your preferred username.
If your preferred Instagram or Facebook username is available, WhatsApp also allows you to use the same handle, making it easier to maintain a consistent identity across Meta's platforms.
The arrival of WhatsApp usernames has been years in the making. The feature has appeared in beta testing several times over the past few years, with many users eagerly awaiting its official release.
With usernames finally becoming a reality, WhatsApp joins messaging platforms such as Telegram and WeChat, both of which have long allowed users to connect without exchanging phone numbers.
For users who value privacy, the new feature offers a safer and more convenient way to communicate while keeping personal contact information protected.
