Questions are being raised on social media, on whether the new government will reopen case into the 12 men allegedly linked to the now-defunct Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

This after MIC leaders were seen hosting the 12 men and their families, to a function at the party headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, recently.

A tweet by MIC on March 6 (last Friday) shows party president SA Vigneswaran, as well as his deputy M Saravanan, mingling with the freed men, and their families.

For the record, MIC's partners in the newly minted Perikatan Nasional coalition government - Bersatu, Umno and PAS, had been very critical of the move by former Attorney-General Tommy Thomas to free the men last month.

Netizens are taking to Twitter to question if two sets of rules applied to the previous government, and the current one.Some are questioning the silence by Bersatu, PAS and Umno on the meeting between MIC leaders and the released suspects.In releasing the suspects last month, ex-AG Tommy Thomas had said the men's "offence" of only having photos of slain LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and other leaders of the group in their mobile phones or Facebook accounts, does not constitute a criminal offence, and as such, continuing with the proceedings would bring the law into disrepute.

Those detained included 2 DAP assemblymen, and 3 DAP members.

The matter became ammo for then opposition Umno and PAS, who accused the Pakatan Harapan government of engineering the release, due to DAP.

PAS had asked Thomas' resignation following the issue, while Bersatu and Umno had cried alleged abuse of power by Thomas.

Whether the new government, led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, will reopen the files into the LTTE case, and what stand MIC will take if indeed the case is reviewed, remains to be seen.

It is also worth noting that MIC had provided free legal aid to five of the 12 suspects when they were arrested last year.
