The world's tallest Murugan statue was consecrated in Puthiragoundampalayam in Salem, Tamil Nadu, today.

Measuring a majestic 146-feet, the Muthumalai Murugan statue is six foot taller than the 140-foot high Batu Caves Murugan. The colorful statue is seen sporting an 80-foot spear (vel).

N Sridhar, the chairman of the Sri Muthumalai Murugar Trust said that the statue would enable people in India to easily worship Lord Murugan instead of making a trip to Malaysia.

Sridhar decided to construct a temple and a statue on a parcel of land he owned, in 2014, and construction works began two years later.

Renowned sculptor Tiruvarur’ Thiyagarajan, under whose guidance the Batu Caves Murugan was constructed, was roped in for the project.

The Muthumalai Murugan temple management performed the "bhoomi poja" on Tuesday evening, and the consecration carried out this morning (local time), saw rose petals being showered on the majestic statue from a helicopter.

Scores of devotees gathered to witness the consecration ceremony. You can watch it below:
