Samuel Moutoussamy : The Tamil-Origin Footballer Representing DR Congo At The FIFA World Cup 2026

Samuel Moutoussamy

As the FIFA World Cup 2026 captures the attention of football fans around the globe, one player is drawing special interest for a unique reason beyond the game.

Samuel Moutoussamy, a key midfielder for DR Congo, carries a fascinating heritage that connects Africa, Europe and India with roots tracing back to the Tamil community.

Born on August 12, 1996, in Paris, France, Moutoussamy has built a reputation as a hardworking and intelligent midfielder known for his energy, tactical awareness and leadership on the pitch.

His professional career began in France, where he progressed through various youth academies before making his breakthrough with FC Nantes. During his seven-year spell at the club, he made more than 140 appearances and established himself as a dependable presence in midfield.

His football journey later took him to the Netherlands, Turkey and Greece, where he continued to develop his game at the highest level.

On the international stage, Moutoussamy chose to represent DR Congo through his mother's Congolese heritage. Since making his debut in 2019, he has earned more than 50 caps and played a crucial role in the national team's rise, including helping the Leopards reach the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, what makes his story especially meaningful for many is his connection to Tamil ancestry.

Moutoussamy's father is of Indo-Guadeloupean descent, with family roots tracing back to Tamil labourers who travelled from India to Guadeloupe during the 19th century. His mother is from Congo, giving him a rich multicultural heritage that spans continents.

While he was born and raised in France and now represents DR Congo on the international stage, his Tamil roots make him one of the footballers with Indian ancestry competing at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

As DR Congo prepares for its World Cup campaign, the experienced midfielder is expected to play a vital role in the team's ambitions.
