The journey of Dr. Fadhilahanim Aryani Abdullah, a lecturer at the Faculty of Hospitality, Tourism and Wellbeing (FHPK), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), has become a source of inspiration to many. She successfully completed her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) despite undergoing 22 chemotherapy sessions and 20 radiotherapy treatments.
Dr. Fadhilahanim Aryani’s academic pursuit spanned nearly 10 years and was marked by profound personal challenges. Throughout this period, she courageously battled stage four cancer and underwent three major surgeries, including a mastectomy.
Reflecting on her experience, she shared that while she lost a part of herself physically, it was through that loss that she discovered her true strength.
Throughout her journey, she received unwavering guidance and encouragement from her main supervisor, Dato’ Prof. Dr. Nik Maheran Nik Muhammad. Despite frequent physical weakness due to ongoing treatments, she remained resolute in completing her thesis titled The Influence of Innovation Competency, Innovation Capability, Digital Technology Adoption and Innovation Performance Among Health and Wellness Tourism Firms in Malaysia.
This achievement would not have been possible without the steadfast support of her husband, Aidil Afizie Daud, former Director of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) Kelantan. He shared that they faced every challenge together, noting that although her body was often weak, her spirit never faltered.
In 2023, Dr. Fadhilahanim Aryani faced another major trial when the cancer spread to her bones. Undeterred, she underwent Total Hip Replacement (THR) surgery to address the damage caused by metastasis and continued her journey with remarkable perseverance.
Today, Dr. Fadhilahanim Aryani views every scar on her body not as a sign of weakness, but as a symbol of courage and survival. She no longer sees herself as a patient, but as a fighter who has overcome countless battles.
Her journey now extends beyond personal achievement. She actively shares her experiences and positive outlook with students and fellow cancer patients, offering hope, strength, and encouragement to those facing similar challenges.
Her years of sacrifices were finally honoured at the 15th UMK Convocation Ceremony (First Session), held at the Chancellor’s Hall in Bachok, Kelantan, where she received her PhD degree. The moment was witnessed with pride and gratitude by her family and colleagues who stood by her throughout her long journey.
The story of Dr. Fadhilahanim Aryani Abdullah proves that illness is not a barrier to success. Today, she stands not only as a dedicated lecturer, but also as a powerful symbol of the resilience of Malaysian women who succeed in achieving their highest aspirations despite overwhelming odds.
