Katiravan

After travelling across 109 countries and covering more than 209,000km on his beloved touring bike Parameswara, Malaysian adventurer Katiravan Subarayan has finally returned home, bringing an emotional close to one of the most extraordinary journeys ever undertaken by a Malaysian biker.

Born and bred in Malacca, the 65-year-old arrived at Dewan Rakyat Taman Batu Caves on May 9, the very same place where he began his life-changing expedition on January 2, 2023.

More than 200 people gathered to welcome him home, including family members, fellow bikers, supporters and dignitaries. The emotional homecoming event was organised by Stevan Mok and members of Jivatma Bikers, who had stood behind Katiravan’s mission from the very beginning.

For 1,223 days, Katiravan travelled across deserts, icy mountains, endless highways and isolated backroads stretching through Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Central Asia, China, Southeast Asia and beyond.

He rode through the freezing landscapes of Antarctica and Alaska, witnessed the breathtaking Nazca Lines in Peru, crossed Iran before regional conflict escalated, and reached Everest Base Camp through Tibet’s challenging mountain routes.

But behind the incredible photographs and adventure was a journey built on sacrifice, determination and the support of people who believed in him.

Katiravan revealed that one of the biggest reasons he successfully completed the expedition was his wife, whom he described as the strongest pillar behind his journey.

At first, she was deeply worried and afraid for his safety, knowing he would spend years riding across unfamiliar territories and dangerous conditions. Yet despite her fears, she chose to support his dream wholeheartedly because she understood how much the journey meant to him.

Her silent sacrifice became one of the most emotional parts of his story.

“In order for you to gain something in life, sometimes you need to lose something,” Katiravan reflected - a statement that deeply touched many who followed his journey.

To finance his dream, the retired electrician even sold one of his properties and spent almost three-and-a-half years away from his loved ones.

Still, he says every hardship was worth it.

The journey, however, was never just about travelling the world.

Katiravan carried a larger mission in his heart, raising awareness about global warming while introducing Malaysia to people across different cultures and countries.

Throughout the expedition, he planted 190 trees and engaged with more than 6,000 people through talks, conversations and awareness activities.

He shared stories about Malaysia in schools, universities and communities around the world, proudly carrying the Malaysian spirit wherever he went.

Along the way, he encountered brutal sandstorms in Mongolia, dangerous crosswinds in Patagonia, freezing mountain passes in Tibet and moments of complete isolation when even GPS signals disappeared.

Yet what remained strongest in his memory was not the hardship, but the kindness of strangers.

From offering food and shelter to helping with laundry and celebrating birthdays together, people from different parts of the world embraced him warmly despite cultural and language barriers.

Another important figure behind the journey was Dato Seri Steven Mok, who continuously supported Katiravan financially and emotionally without hesitation.

Katiravan acknowledged that the encouragement and belief shown by his close supporters gave him strength to keep moving forward even during the toughest phases of the expedition.

And through every kilometre of the journey, one loyal companion remained by his side, Parameswara, his trusted BMW R 1200 GSA motorcycle.

“It never failed me,” he said simply.

Today, Parameswara is more than just a motorcycle. It has become part of a historic Malaysian story that crossed continents, connected cultures and inspired thousands of people around the world.

For Katiravan, this was never just a ride around the globe.

It was a journey about humanity, sacrifice, courage, environmental awareness and proving that even the biggest dreams can become reality when carried with passion, faith and the support of people who truly believe in you.
