More than two decades after its release, Rhythm continues to be celebrated as one of Tamil cinema’s most mature and emotionally resonant love stories. Directed by Vasanth and featuring Arjun Sarja and Meena in lead roles, the film stood apart from the commercial trends of its time with its sensitive portrayal of grief, healing and second chances in love.
Interestingly, actor Arjun recently revealed that he was initially hesitant to take up the role in Rhythm. At the time, he was widely known for action-oriented films and was unsure about stepping into a character that relied more on emotional depth than heroism.
Director Vasanth, however, saw something different in him.
Unable to cast some of the popular leading stars due to scheduling conflicts, Vasanth approached Arjun based on the producer’s suggestion. While many saw Arjun as an action hero, the director believed he could bring a different dimension to the role.
Looking back, Vasanth has often said that he wanted to transform the "Action King" into an "Acting King" through Rhythm.
Meena was always the first choice for the female lead. According to Vasanth, she delivered the emotional moments of the film effortlessly and brought authenticity to the character. The director also revealed that veteran actors Nagesh and Lakshmi were always in his mind while writing the roles of the elderly couple in the film.
One of the most distinctive aspects of Rhythm was its music by A.R. Rahman. The director had envisioned an album built around the five natural elements, with each song representing a different aspect of nature.
Rahman immediately connected with the concept. The songs were composed in Pasumalai near Madurai, and the first track to be created was Nadhiye Nadhiye. During the composing session, Vasanth was particularly fond of the refrain "Dheem Thana Na", which Rahman eventually transformed into the song’s memorable pallavi.
For the background score, Rahman opted for a minimalist and international approach, creating thematic pieces that elevated the emotional weight of the film while maintaining subtlety.
According to Vasanth, the central idea behind Rhythm was that death is not the end of life. The story explores how people heal from loss and find the courage to embrace life again.
Philosophically, the film draws parallels between human life and nature’s cyclical processes. This idea was reflected in the lyrics as well, particularly in the line from Nadhiye Nadhiye: “Thaneer kudathil pirakirom, thaneer karayil mudikirom,” which symbolises the journey of life from beginning to end.
The director has also revealed that the inspiration for Rhythm came from a real-life incident he encountered during his days as a journalist. He came across a story about a man who had lost his wife in a plane crash reaching out to a woman who had lost her husband in the same accident.
The unusual situation fascinated him. His biggest challenge was figuring out how to bring together two individuals who had no interest in falling in love again. The screenplay eventually evolved around that emotional conflict, with supporting characters playing crucial roles in guiding the protagonists towards healing.
Vasanth has even admitted that Rhythm was originally the first film he wanted to make, long before it eventually reached the screens.
Reflecting on his own filmmaking journey, the director also spoke about how his portrayal of romance evolved over time. Comparing Rhythm to his earlier film Nerukku Ner, he acknowledged that certain romantic approaches accepted during that period would not align with his current perspective.
He explained that while the intentions of certain characters may have been good, some of their actions would no longer fit his understanding of respectful relationships today.
According to Vasanth, genuine happiness should never come at the cost of disturbing another person, and that belief has influenced the way he approaches storytelling in his later works.
Rhythm – till date we wouldn’t deny that it is one of the greatest movie.
