AR Rahman isn’t called a genius for nothing. But here’s a twist that’s been making fans’ jaws drop, the soulful raagam of Mutha Mazhai, which recently became a sensation thanks to Dhee and Chinmayi’s magical voices, actually traces its roots back to 1998.

A viral video has revealed that the Mutha Mazhai melody was first heard as a background score in the climax of Jeans, Rahman’s iconic soundtrack for the Shankar-directed film. That’s right, the tune we’ve been humming nonstop today was quietly living in a movie scene almost three decades ago.

And this isn’t the first time Rahman has hidden musical gems in plain sight. Remember Telephone Manipol from Roja (1992)? That too carried a beautiful BGM motif he later brought to life in full glory.

Only Rahman could plant a melody in the past, let it sleep for decades, and then wake it up to take over our playlists. That’s not just music-making, that’s time-travelling through sound.
