H. Vinoth Reveals What Really Happened When Prakash Raj Criticised Vijay Before They Met on Set

Prakash Raj has never been one to stay silent when it comes to politics. Whether speaking about national issues or sharing his views on fellow actors entering public life, the veteran actor has always been vocal, even when those opinions involve long-time collaborator Vijay.

But according to Jana Nayagan director H. Vinoth, political differences have never come in the way of their personal friendship.

Speaking in a recent interview, Vinoth recalled an incident that left him genuinely concerned before filming. Just a day earlier, Prakash Raj had publicly criticised Vijay over his political ambitions, and the two were scheduled to shoot together the very next morning.

Vinoth wondered if there would be awkwardness or tension on set. Instead, what happened completely surprised him.

"When I reached the set, Prakash Raj sir was already there. As soon as Vijay sir arrived, they greeted each other warmly and started chatting like old friends," Vinoth shared.

Even more interestingly, Prakash Raj affectionately addressed Vijay as "chellam" - a nickname that has become closely associated with him ever since his iconic performance in Ghilli, where the word became one of the film's most memorable dialogues.

According to Vinoth, that warmth has never changed.

"On set, Vijay is still his chellam," he said, explaining that both actors clearly separate cinema from politics.

The director added that despite their differing political opinions, they have built a friendship over decades of working together and continue to respect one another professionally.

Vinoth also praised both actors for being open-minded. He said Prakash Raj appreciates Vijay whenever he believes he is doing the right thing, while Vijay is equally willing to accept constructive criticism if it is genuine.

The revelation has sparked conversations among fans, especially because Prakash Raj had previously questioned Vijay's political journey ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

During a campaign speech, Prakash Raj argued that Vijay had not actively spoken up on issues concerning Tamil Nadu or its people despite enjoying immense public support as an actor.
