Jayaram On Panchatanthiram Sequel : ‘No Replacement For Nagesh And Crazy Mohan’

Even more than two decades after its release, Panchatanthiram continues to enjoy cult status among Tamil cinema fans. Directed by KS Ravikumar and headlined by Kamal Haasan, the 2002 comedy entertainer remains one of Kollywood’s most celebrated films, remembered for its sharp screenplay, witty dialogues and unforgettable comic timing.

Among the many standout performances, Jayaram’s chemistry with Urvashi continues to hold a special place in the hearts of audiences.

Now, while promoting his upcoming film Parimala and Co, Jayaram has reunited with Urvashi after more than two decades, their first major collaboration since Panchatanthiram. Naturally, the reunion has reignited discussions surrounding a possible sequel to the iconic comedy.

Addressing the possibility in a recent interview, Jayaram shared that fans frequently urge him to speak to Kamal Haasan about making Panchatanthiram 2.

“Many have been asking me to tell Kamal sir to make a sequel to Panchatanthiram. I can do that. But even if he wants to make it happen, we cannot find replacements for two important people, Nagesh and Crazy Mohan. We may find alternatives for everyone else, but there is no alternative to them,” he said.

Jayaram’s statement shows the emotional connection many fans continue to share with the film, particularly its writing by the late Crazy Mohan and the legendary presence of Nagesh.

Panchatanthiram featured an ensemble cast including Kamal Haasan, Jayaram, Ramesh Aravind, Sriman, Yugi Sethu, Simran and Ramya Krishnan, while Urvashi, Aishwarya, Sanghavi, Vidhya Venkatesh, Devayani and Nagesh played memorable supporting roles.

Over the years, the film has remained an evergreen favourite in Kamal Haasan’s filmography, with several scenes and dialogues continuing to thrive in pop culture.

Interestingly, a sequel had once been explored. Director KS Ravikumar reportedly envisioned parts of the story unfolding aboard a cruise liner. However, the project never materialised, and the cruise concept was later adapted into Manmadan Ambu in 2010, which also starred Kamal Haasan.

Years later, filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj too considered revisiting the Panchatanthiram universe before eventually shelving the idea and collaborating with Kamal Haasan on Vikram.

Fans were also treated to a nostalgic reunion when Jayaram, Yugi Sethu, Ramesh Aravind and Sriman came together for a fun promotional video for Vikram, recreating memories reminiscent of Panchatanthiram’s iconic conference-call sequence.

While Panchatanthiram 2 remains uncertain, Jayaram’s heartfelt words underline why the original continues to be irreplaceable in Tamil cinema history.
