Is Ilaiyaraaja likely to compose for Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Thalaivar 173? Kamal Haasan has addressed the speculation, saying that decisions for the project will be made jointly with Rajinikanth.
Speaking to the media, Kamal said, “It’s his film. I alone cannot make any decisions. He and I should make decisions together.” His remarks come amid growing curiosity about the film, which marks the reunion of two of Tamil cinema’s biggest icons.

Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan recently announced the project, but key details remain under wraps. The film was initially set to be directed by Sundar C. However, the filmmaker exited the project citing “unforeseen circumstances.” Kamal later confirmed the development, adding that he would proceed with the project only if both stars were satisfied with the script. The makers are expected to announce a new director soon.
At the same media interaction, Kamal Haasan also spoke about reviving one of his most ambitious films, Marudhanayagam. The long-delayed historical epic, shelved in the late 1990s, may finally move forward thanks to modern filmmaking technology.
“I am confident that Marudhanayagam is possible with the advancement of technology in today’s era,” Kamal said, reigniting hope among fans who have waited decades to see the project come alive.
Based on the life of 18th-century warrior Muhammad Yusuf Khan, also known as Marudhanayagam, the film was launched in 1999 with unprecedented scale and global attention. The muhurat event drew international interest, and Queen Elizabeth II herself acknowledged the project. Despite the promising start, production hurdles and the technological limitations of that time forced the team to shelve the film after completing only a portion of the shoot.
With advancements in visual effects, production design and filmmaking tools, Kamal Haasan now believes the dream project can finally be realised.
