Lokesh Kanagaraj has finally addressed the online trolling that has followed him over the past year, and rather than getting defensive, the filmmaker appears to be taking the criticism in his stride.
During a promotional interaction for his upcoming film, a co-star asked Lokesh how he deals with the memes and trolling directed at him. His response was surprisingly casual.
“Even my mother sends me screenshots of the trolling. What’s there to get tensed about?” he said with a laugh.
But behind the humour, Lokesh acknowledged that the criticism did not come out of nowhere.
“If our work is good, they’ll celebrate us. But if there’s a mistake, we’ll become the target of trolls,” he said.
Referring to his recent films Leo and Coolie, the filmmaker admitted that both films had their share of shortcomings.
“My previous two films, Leo and Coolie, had some mistakes, and that’s how things turned out. So, they’re trolling me now,” he said.
Rather than dwelling on the backlash, Lokesh appears to be looking ahead. The filmmaker expressed confidence in his upcoming project with Allu Arjun, suggesting that the film could change the narrative surrounding him.
He believes that once the film reaches audiences, the trolling will naturally die down. And that confidence has already sparked another conversation among movie fans.
Some netizens have welcomed his attitude, seeing it as a sign that the filmmaker is ready to move forward and prove himself again. For them, the upcoming Allu Arjun collaboration could be the film that brings Lokesh back into the spotlight. But not everyone is convinced.
A section of social media users has pointed out that similar confidence surrounded Leo and Coolie before their releases. Some have also noted that Lokesh appeared far more reserved and humbler during the period following Vikram.
For them, the question is no longer about what Lokesh says about his next film, but what he delivers on screen. Because that is the brutal nature of the internet and the meme culture surrounding cinema.
One film can elevate a filmmaker. One disappointment can become a running joke. And every film that follows can be judged against the last one. The memes don't necessarily allow a filmmaker to simply have a bad film and move on. Instead, every new interview, every confident statement and every upcoming project can become another opportunity to revisit what went wrong before.
For Lokesh, the only real answer may ultimately be the film itself. The trolling can continue and the expectations can remain high.
But when the lights go down and the audience finally watches his next film, the conversation will once again come down to one thing, the work.
