R Madhavan on Career Breaks, Comebacks and the Wife Who Keeps Him Grounded

Madhavan

Actor R Madhavan recently spoke about a phase in his life that quietly changed the way he looked at work and himself. Taking a four-year break from acting turned out to be the reset he didn’t know he needed, helping him return with more clarity and a stronger sense of purpose.

During a chat with YouTube channel Unfiltered Entertainment, Madhavan recalled the pandemic days with humour, especially an incident involving his wife, Sarita. While the world slowed down during COVID-19 in 2020, he found himself unusually at home. Sarita, however, wasn’t amused.

With a laugh, Madhavan shared how she told him to step out and get back to work, reminding him that he was capable of handling projects across languages and platforms. Whether it was Tamil, Hindi, OTT or international projects, she believed he had no reason to sit idle.

But behind the joke was a moment of honesty that stayed with him. Madhavan recalled how Sarita once asked him what was really bothering him. She pointed out that he seemed to approach work with the mindset of wanting to return home quickly, instead of enjoying the process. That simple observation made him pause and reassess his attitude towards his career.

Madhavan has often spoken about how Sarita keeps him grounded, especially when it comes to money. In a previous interview, he shared that his wife thinks he is too generous and not careful enough with his finances. While he believes he spends responsibly, she feels he gives too much away.

The actor clarified that he may not chase material possessions, but he always lives within his means. If something doesn’t fit his budget, he simply doesn’t buy it. For him, freedom and balance matter more than flashy symbols of stardom.

Their story together began in the early 1990s in Kolhapur, when Sarita joined Madhavan’s public speaking and personality development classes while aspiring to work in aviation. After securing her job, she invited him out for dinner as a thank-you. That simple gesture marked the beginning of a journey that continues to keep him grounded, focused and honest.
