Rajinikanth is set to reprise his popular role as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian in Jailer 2, the upcoming sequel to his 2023 action blockbuster. Although the veteran actor has generally been reluctant to revisit successful films through sequels, he recently revealed what convinced him to return for director Nelson Dilipkumar’s action drama.
Speaking at the film’s pre-release event, Jailer 2 Super Show, Rajinikanth shared that he had previously turned down sequel proposals for two of his popular films, Baasha and Petta.
Despite the enduring popularity of his earlier films, Rajinikanth explained that he is not usually enthusiastic about continuing their stories through sequels.
“I am generally not keen on sequels because I feel they take the first part and add a little extra flavour and turn it into another film,” he said.
The actor revealed that he had been approached with a proposal for Baasha 2. Director Karthik Subbaraj had also approached him with an idea for Petta 2, which would have expanded Vijay Sethupathi’s character. However, Rajinikanth said he was not interested in either project.
Rajinikanth’s decision changed after he rewatched Jailer following its OTT release. He recalled how the film’s ending hinted at a much larger criminal network, giving the story a natural direction for a sequel.
“After Jailer was released on OTT, I watched the movie again. Towards the end, when I was about to end Varma’s character, he says there’s a bigger network and that they wouldn’t spare him either. So, the story was perfect for a sequel,” he explained.
The revelation suggested that Varma’s connections extended far beyond what was initially shown, potentially setting the stage for a much bigger challenge for Tiger Muthuvel Pandian in the sequel.
Another unresolved element involved three containers reportedly worth thousands of crores, adding further intrigue to the story and leaving audiences curious about what Jailer 2 has in store.
