The love story of Suriya and Jyotika has long been celebrated as one of Tamil cinema’s most enduring real-life romances. However, the actor’s father, veteran actor Sivakumar, has now revealed that he was initially opposed to their relationship before eventually giving his blessing.
In an interview with Galatta, Sivakumar shared that he did not accept Suriya’s love at first. He explained that his son was firm in his decision and made it clear that he would only marry Jyotika, or else remain single for the rest of his life. Reflecting on this, Sivakumar said he began to reconsider his stance, especially given that he had acted in nearly 150 films during his career, many of which revolved around love marriages. This realisation ultimately led him to support his son’s decision.
Sivakumar also recalled Suriya’s reserved nature during his younger years, noting that it was actress Radikaa Sarathkumar who encouraged him to express his feelings to Jyotika. What began as a hesitant step soon developed into a committed relationship. Sivakumar fondly remarked that his once-shy son is now a family man and father of two.
Suriya and Jyotika fell in love while working together on the film Poovellam Kettuppar and were married on September 11, 2006. They are now parents to two children, Diya and Dev, and continue to be admired for their strong partnership both on and off screen.
On the professional front, Suriya is preparing for the release of his upcoming fantasy action film Karuppu, directed by RJ Balaji and co-starring Trisha Krishnan. The film reportedly follows a lawyer who becomes possessed by a divine force to fight injustice.
The actor, best known for his National Award-winning performance in Soorarai Pottru, is also working on his next projects, including Suriya46, a family drama featuring Raveena Tandon and Mamitha Baiju, as well as Suriya47, a cop action-comedy directed by Jithu Madhavan and co-starring Nazriya Nazim Fahadh and Naslen.
Despite early resistance, Suriya and Jyotika’s journey stands today as a testament to love, conviction, and the eventual acceptance that strengthened one of cinema’s most admired families.
