For Suriya, acting was never part of the plan.
The actor who has acted in Vishwanath and Sons this Friday, revealed that his journey into cinema began at a time when his family was facing financial difficulties.
Speaking in an interview released by the film’s producer, Sithara Entertainment, Suriya opened up about his early days in the industry, his co-stars and the experiences that shaped him as an actor and a father.
Looking back, Suriya admitted that he never imagined himself becoming an actor.
“I never knew that I would become an actor,” he said, explaining that his brother Karthi had always been interested in cinema, while he only discovered that he would be appearing in front of the camera just five days before his first opportunity.
With no formal preparation, Suriya said he learnt everything while standing in front of the camera. At the time, however, his motivation was simple.
“There were financial issues at home, and I needed to act. I intended to earn and give my mom money,” he shared.
But what began as a way to support his family slowly became something much deeper. The love and acceptance he received from audiences, even during moments when he struggled or made mistakes on screen, made him realise that acting came with a responsibility.
Suriya also expressed gratitude towards the directors who believed in him and gave him opportunities to explore different kinds of characters, including Gautham Vasudev Menon’s Vaaranam Aayiram.
While Vishwanath and Sons sees Suriya sharing the screen with a baby, the conversation also brought him to a deeply personal subject, his own children, Diya and Dev.

Suriya admitted that his busy career meant he missed out on some of the early years of his daughter Diya’s childhood.
“I think I missed out a lot, especially when Diya was a kid,” he said, recalling how work and constant travel kept him occupied during her early years.
When his son Dev was born, however, Suriya said he realised that he wanted to be more present and consciously made an effort to be part of his childhood. He then shared a particularly beautiful memory surrounding the birth of his daughter.
Behind the actor who has spent decades entertaining audiences is a man who still remembers why he first stepped in front of a camera to help his family. And perhaps that is what makes Suriya’s journey all the more meaningful.
