Urvashi and Vijay Were Originally Cast for M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi

Urvashi has revealed that she was initially considered to play the mother in the Tamil hit film ‘M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi’, a role that eventually went to Nadiya Moidu.

Speaking to The Mollywood Show Time, the veteran actress said she was approached for the film during its early discussions, when Vijay was also reportedly being considered for the lead role instead of Ravi Mohan.

According to Urvashi, the character was initially conceived along the lines of the relationship between Meera and Urvashi’s characters in the Malayalam film ‘Achuvinte Amma’. However, she felt that she could not connect with the role at that stage of her life.

“I couldn’t embrace that character. At that time, I had just got married and my daughter had not even been born. I felt it would be difficult for me and told them that I wouldn’t be able to do it,” Urvashi recalled.

The role eventually went to Nadiya Moidu, who played Mahalakshmi, the strong-willed mother of Kumaran in the 2004 film. Urvashi also revealed that Vijay was considered for the lead role during the film's initial stages.

She said she had been approached for several opportunities to work with Vijay over the years and recalled meeting the actor before he became a leading star. According to Urvashi, she first met Vijay when she was shooting for a film in Nagercoil. She visited the apartment where Vijay was staying with his parents after learning that actor and director S. A. Chandrasekhar and his family were there.

Urvashi recalled that Chandrasekhar had told her that Vijay was going to become a hero and that there was a character in an upcoming project for which they were looking for a Malayalam actress. She even suggested actress Bindu Panicker for the role.

Urvashi said she later received several opportunities to work with Vijay, but for various reasons, those projects did not materialise. Her latest revelation offers an interesting glimpse into how one of Tamil cinema's popular mother-son stories could have looked very different, with Urvashi and Vijay potentially sharing the screen.

In the end, the role went to Nadiya, while Ravi Mohan played the titular character and ‘M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi’ went on to become a memorable film for Tamil audiences.
