Aadi Perukku: Why Devotees Buy These Three Sacred Items?

Aadi Perukku is celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Aadi and is a festival dedicated to expressing gratitude for water, nature and prosperity. As Tamil Nadu has long been an agricultural region, the day is observed to honour rivers, lakes and other water bodies that sustain farming and livelihoods.

Traditionally, rivers and lakes would overflow during this season due to the monsoon rains. As a result, devotees worship these water bodies, especially River Kaveri, who is revered as Mother Kaveri, by offering prayers along the riverbanks and expressing gratitude for nature's blessings.

Three auspicious items to buy on Aadi Perukku:

1. Rock salt

2. Whole turmeric (Virali Manjal)

3. Thuvaram Paruppu

These three items should ideally be purchased and brought home during an auspicious time. They are first placed in the prayer room and offered prayers before being taken to the kitchen and used in daily cooking. It is considered auspicious to bring these items into the house before 6.00 pm on Aadi Perukku. If purchasing all three is not possible, devotees may buy at least one of them.

What else can you buy on Aadi Perukku?

Apart from rice, Thuvaram Paruppu (dhal), turmeric, patchai karpooram, devotees also purchase kumkumam, mangalsutra thread (Mangalya Saradu) and mirrors, as these are believed to bring prosperity and good fortune.

The day is also considered highly favourable for purchasing long-awaited items, especially gold and silver for weddings and other auspicious occasions. Many people choose Aadi Perukku to begin marriage discussions, send wedding invitations for printing, or commence new construction projects, believing it will invite blessings, abundance and success.
