Recommended rituals for Aani Amavasai
On this spiritually significant day, devotees are encouraged to:- Light an Additional Lamp: At dawn, light an extra oil lamp to purify the home and welcome positive energies and ancestral presence.
- Decorate with Mango Leaves: Hanging fresh mango leaves at the entrance is believed to attract positive vibrations and ward off negativity.
- Perform Tarpanam: If possible, invite a priest to perform Tarpanam, the ritual of offering water mixed with sesame seeds in memory of ancestors.
- Simple Offerings: If formal rituals are not possible, devotees can offer simple items such as bananas, rice, or lentils as a form of daan (charitable offering).
- Annadhanam (Food Donation): The most revered form of charity on this day is offering food to the needy. Devotees can also donate to temples or spiritual institutions according to their ability.
