It has been two years since Vijay Sethupathi took over as the host of Bigg Boss Tamil, succeeding Kamal Haasan, who once described the show as a bridge that connected him to millions of households across Tamil Nadu. Vijay Sethupathi’s debut as host in Season 8 was well-received, thanks to an engaging mix of contestants and his fresh approach. However, the current season, Bigg Boss Tamil 9 has been dominated by chaos, and the actor’s handling of contestants involved in mudslinging and aggressive behaviour has drawn mixed reactions.
Hosting Bigg Boss is no easy feat. The role demands a delicate balance, one cannot reveal what’s happening outside the house, yet must subtly guide contestants on how their actions are being perceived by the public. The art lies in those unspoken hints and controlled reactions.
Vijay Sethupathi, the newest addition to the long list of Bigg Boss hosts across Indian languages, still appears to be finding his rhythm. Last week, he openly mentioned to the contestants that Gana Vinoth and Diwaker’s video had gone viral on social media, a move seen by many as crossing the invisible line between the show’s inside world and the outside reality. The aftermath was troubling: Vinoth took things too far, resorting to bullying and body-shaming.
Meanwhile, contestant Kamrudin has repeatedly displayed violent behaviour inside the house. Despite multiple warnings and sharp words from the host, he has not faced a formal yellow card. In contrast, during previous seasons, Kamal Haasan did not hesitate to issue disciplinary action giving Mahat Raghavendra a red card and Nixen a yellow card for threats of physical violence.
Over the weekend episodes, Vijay Sethupathi addressed Kamrudin’s actions, calling out his lies and aggressive tendencies, but stopped short of imposing any concrete penalty. The lack of firm intervention appeared to embolden Kamrudin, who went on to make personal remarks about fellow contestant Tushaar’s upbringing, a confrontation that nearly escalated into a physical altercation.
This incident occurred despite Sethupathi’s earlier warning that the Bigg Boss team would not wait for the audience to evict Kamrudin if his behaviour continued. Yet, as tensions rose, the host moved on to the next segment elimination without taking decisive action.
Such instances have sparked debate among viewers. Three weeks into the season, Kamrudin continues to draw warnings for his repeated outbursts and inappropriate conduct, yet remains in the game. Many believe the host’s leniency is beginning to affect the credibility of the show itself.
Unlike past seasons, Bigg Boss Tamil 9 features contestants with substantial online followings, many being influencers with large fanbases. But rather than leveraging their influence positively, the season has become a battleground of arguments and drama with little purpose. Vijay Sethupathi recently addressed this during the weekend episode, reminding contestants that such behaviour could cost them their fans and reputation.
With the growing criticism of his hosting style and the show’s volatile environment, speculation is mounting: Will Vijay Sethupathi step down as the host of Bigg Boss Tamil 9?
