Heartburn is a painful and burning feeling in the chest and throat.

Acid reflux is when stomach acid gets pushed up into the esophagus, which is the tube that carries food and drink from the mouth to the stomach.

Some reflux is normal and harmless, usually causing no symptoms. But when it happens too often, it burns the inside of the esophagus.

The most common symptom of acid reflux is known as heartburn, which is a painful, burning feeling in the chest or throat. Here are some natural ways to treat it.

1. Bananas

The potassium in bananas helps to lower the pH levels in the body by producing mucous and protects the lining of the stomach. Bananas are also high in fibre which is beneficial for digestion. It is advisable to eat the over ripe ones if you suffer from heartburn.

2. Melons

Melons such as cantaloupe, musk melon and watermelon are high in antioxidants and fibre, and help avoid acid reflux by protecting the stomach lining. The cooling properties and high water content in these fruits help hydrate the body and reduce the pH levels.

3. Cold milk

Milk absorbs the excess acid in the stomach, stopping any reflux or burning sensation. It is best to drink plain milk for it to be effective.

4. Buttermilk and curd

Milk products (except cheese) like curd and buttermilk help to cool down the stomach. The probiotic or bacteria in them stops excess acid from forming in the stomach. They also help to regulate digestion and to keep the bones strong.
