Prof Dr K. Sivakumar, a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon and Professor at Universiti Malaya (UM), has created history by becoming the first Malaysian to receive the prestigious Fellowship in the Faculty of Surgical Trainers from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd).

This remarkable achievement was conferred during the Royal College Diplomate Ceremony and marks a proud milestone for Malaysia in the global surgical community. The fellowship is awarded only to surgeons who have shown exceptional dedication to surgical education and leadership, qualities Dr Sivakumar has embodied throughout his career.

For Dr Sivakumar, this recognition holds deep meaning. As a passionate educator, he believes that the true impact of a surgeon goes beyond saving lives in the operating theatre, it lies in shaping the next generation of skilled surgeons. In his own words, “As a surgeon, I can save one life at a time. But as a trainer, I can empower others to save many more. If I do one, I treat 10; but if I train 10, I get 100 done. This is what drives my passion.”

Beyond his personal achievement, Dr Sivakumar is also spearheading the development of Malaysia’s first Master’s programme in Cardiothoracic Surgery at UM, aiming to establish the university as a regional centre of excellence and a hub for training top-tier surgeons across ASEAN.

UM Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman praised Dr Sivakumar’s accomplishment, calling it a reflection of the university’s pursuit of excellence and a source of inspiration for the UM community to continue striving for global recognition.
