For many families in the B40 community, falling sick often comes with an impossible choice, wait hours at a government hospital or pay for treatment they simply cannot afford.

It is a reality that thousands of Malaysians face every day. While public healthcare remains heavily relied upon, long waiting times can make even basic medical treatment a challenge.  After witnessing this struggle firsthand for years, Dr. Kamaleswaran Arumugam decided something had to change.

Having spent six years serving as an emergency medical officer in a government hospital before moving into private healthcare for another four years, he saw how financial limitations often determined how quickly someone could receive medical attention.

Many patients would spend six to seven hours waiting in government hospitals because private clinics were simply too expensive for them. That experience stayed with him.

It led him to ask a simple yet powerful question: Why should access to quality healthcare depend on how much money a person has? Determined to make a difference, Dr. Kamaleswaran teamed up with fellow doctor Dr. Kuhelan, who also made the bold decision to leave the security of a government medical career.

Together, they founded QTC Clinic in Batu Caves in 2022 with one clear mission to provide affordable healthcare without compromising on quality. Their idea was straightforward but meaningful. Eligible B40 patients could receive consultation, treatment and medication for as little as RM39.

But turning that vision into reality was far from easy. Their bank loan application was rejected. Some colleagues questioned whether such a business model could survive, while several investors eventually withdrew after losing confidence in the idea.

For many people, that might have been enough to give up. Instead, the two doctors chose to keep going. They invested their own savings into building the clinic and even went months without drawing a salary, believing that the mission was bigger than the obstacles standing in their way.

Their perseverance paid off. Today, QTC Clinic has successfully expanded beyond Batu Caves with another branch in Klang, serving more Malaysians who need affordable medical care. But for Dr. Kamaleswaran and Dr. Kuhelan, this is only the beginning.

Their vision is to expand QTC Clinic across Malaysia, ensuring that quality healthcare is no longer viewed as a privilege, but something every Malaysian can access regardless of their financial background.

Sometimes, it isn't about building the biggest healthcare network. It's about making sure that when someone falls ill, the cost of getting better isn't another burden they have to carry.
