Visitors heading to Genting Highlands will soon notice a new system being introduced along the main access road, Jalan Genting Highlands. Beginning 2 April 2026, a trial phase for a road charge system will be carried out, marking the first step towards a future paid entry model.
So, when does the trial start?
- 2 April 2026
Do you need to pay now?
- No payment required during the trial phase
What do drivers need to do?
- Tap Touch ’n Go card OR
- Use debit/credit card at gantries
- This is for system testing only
Where are the gantries located?
- Genting Sempah (main uphill access)
- Gohtong Jaya roundabout
How will the system work later?
- One-time charge per entry (only when going uphill)
- Fully cashless system
- Uses Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) to detect vehicles automatically
- Multiple lanes will be available at both entry points
How much will it cost?
- No official rate yet
- Early estimates: around RM2.50 to RM5.00
- Experts suggest it may stay below RM10
Why is this being introduced?
Road maintenance is costly due to:
- Mountain terrain
- Landslide prevention
- Drainage and slope stabilisation
- Based on “user pays” concept
Will this effect visitors?
- Not expected to reduce tourism significantly
- Resorts World Genting remains a major attraction
Some may:
- Travel less frequently
- Use alternatives like Awana Skyway
No charges yet but tapping is required and full implementation expected later in 2026.
