Husband Makes Hundreds Of Dives In Search Of Wife Lost In 2011 Tsunami

Some love stories don't end when a person is gone. Sometimes, they continue through memories, unanswered questions and promises that are never forgotten. For Yasuo Takamatsu, more than 15 years have passed since his wife, Yuko, disappeared during the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Yet he continues to search for her, returning to the same waters again and again in the hope of bringing her home.

By March 2026, Takamatsu had reportedly completed 763 dives in the waters off Onagawa, where his wife disappeared. He knows the ocean may never give him the answer he is looking for. But he says he cannot simply stop searching.

Yuko was working at a bank in Onagawa when the tsunami struck on March 11, 2011. Takamatsu was visiting his mother-in-law at a hospital in a neighbouring town when the disaster happened. The destruction and damaged roads meant he could not immediately return to Onagawa.

Before the tsunami, Yuko sent him a final text message.

“Are you okay? I want to go home.”

Those words stayed with him. When Takamatsu eventually reached the evacuation centre, he learned that Yuko and several other bank employees had been swept away.

He began searching for her around the devastated town, hoping to find some trace of where she had gone. Months later, he found something that belonged to her, her mobile phone, recovered from the parking area of her workplace.

The phone contained an unsent message from Yuko: “The tsunami is disastrous.”

But it still could not tell him what had happened to her. For around two and a half years, Takamatsu searched for Yuko on land. Then, in 2013, he decided to look underwater.

He began learning how to scuba dive, despite finding it difficult at first. But the thought of finding his wife gave him the motivation to continue. His diving instructor, Masayoshi Takahashi, also leads volunteer searches for people who remain missing following the tsunami.

Since then, Takamatsu has continued joining these underwater searches, returning to the cold waters with the hope that one day he might find Yuko or something that can lead him to her. He knows the odds are against him. But he continues.

“I do want to find her, but I also feel that she may never be discovered as the ocean is way too vast, but I have to keep looking,” he said.

Takamatsu is not searching because he believes his wife is still alive. He understands that she died in the disaster. What he wants is to find her remains to finally know where she is and, perhaps, bring her home.

For him, stopping the search would mean leaving an unfinished chapter behind. Others have pointed out that the diving itself may have become part of his grieving process, a way of remaining connected to the woman he lost.

More than a thousand days beneath the waves may never lead to the answer he hopes for. But for Takamatsu, the search is not simply about finding someone who disappeared. It is about keeping a promise to someone he loved. And as long as he remains physically able to dive, he says he will keep looking.
