The sea in front of the famous Tiruchendur Murugan Temple has receded for the second consecutive day, exposing algae-covered rocks along a stretch of the shoreline. But what caught the attention of devotees and visitors was something else, a small idol of Karuppasamy was spotted after the sea pulled back from the shore.
According to reports, the sea has receded by around 80 to 100 feet in front of the temple, exposing parts of the seabed that are normally covered by water. The one-foot-tall Karuppasamy idol was reportedly spotted around 50 feet from the usual shoreline, covered in green algae.
Devotees have called for the idol to be carefully removed and preserved, especially as several other idols have reportedly been recovered from the sea in the area previously.
Why has the sea receded?
The unusual sight has naturally attracted the attention of devotees and tourists visiting Tiruchendur. According to the report, the sea has receded along a stretch of approximately 500 metres, from the Selva Theertham area towards the Ayyar Temple.
Some have attributed the recent receding of the sea to the new moon day, which occurred days ago. However, the source does not provide a scientific explanation for the phenomenon. The receding sea has also exposed large rocks covered in green algae, with visitors reportedly walking onto the exposed area to take photographs and selfies.
Authorities and visitors are urged to exercise caution, as algae-covered rocks can be slippery and potentially dangerous.
Thiruchendur, known in ancient times as Thirucheeralivai, the temple is dedicated to Lord Subramaniya Swamy and attracts devotees throughout the year. Devotees visit the temple seeking blessings for various aspects of life, including marriage, family and prosperity.
The receding sea has drawn particular attention because the shoreline in front of the temple has reportedly undergone significant changes over the past six months. According to the report, the area previously experienced increased sea turbulence and erosion, with the shoreline reportedly receding by around 50 feet.
The erosion had made it difficult for devotees to bathe in the sea in front of the temple. The situation has since reportedly begun to stabilise, before the sea was observed receding again last week. The latest occurrence marks the second consecutive day that the sea has been seen pulling back from the temple shoreline.
With the Karuppasamy idol now visible, devotees have called for it to be safely recovered and protected. They have also urged that idols recovered from the sea be preserved and, where appropriate, arrangements be made for devotees to offer prayers.
For those visiting Tiruchendur, the sight of the sea pulling back and revealing a previously hidden stretch of shoreline has certainly become an unexpected talking point.
