A simple moment during an ordinary meal turned into a beautiful lesson in kindness, compassion and humanity for a young girl named Hasya.
While eating out with her mother, Hasya noticed a stray dog sitting nearby, quietly watching them eat. Seeing the hungry animal, she turned to her mother and asked, “Bu, that dog is hungry. How do we feed him?”
For her mother, it was more than just a question. It was a precious opportunity to teach her daughter about compassion.
“Islam teaches us to do good to hungry animals,” she explained, while also reminding her that kindness should go hand in hand with adab, cleanliness and avoiding unnecessary contact.
Then, something unexpected happened. As the mother and daughter watched the dog, a male passer-by walked over and placed a large piece of fried chicken in front of the hungry animal.
It was a small gesture. No expectation of praise. Just one person choosing to help another living being. But for Hasya, the moment meant so much more.
Looking at what had happened, she turned to her mother and said, “Malaysians are good people, kan, Bu?”
Her mother simply nodded.
“Yes, many Malaysians are good people,” she wrote in her Threads post.
The moment stayed with her because the stranger had unknowingly done more than fill a hungry dog's stomach. He had shown a child, through his actions, what kindness looks like. He may have thought he was simply feeding a stray. But to Hasya, he had become an example.
And perhaps that is how kindness grows, not always through grand gestures, but through the little thing's children witness every day.
Because children may not remember every lesson we teach them. But they remember what we show them. And sometimes, one small act of compassion is enough to plant a lifelong lesson in a young heart.
