Actress Jyothika recently shed light on the challenges female actors face in the Tamil film industry, particularly the double standards surrounding age and the lack of substantial roles for women. In an interview with Fever FM, she expressed her concern over how female actors are often side-lined as they grow older, while their male counterparts continue to thrive as superstars.

“It’s a major issue in the South,” Jyothika stated.

“I had my kids when I was 28, and after that, my roles changed significantly. In fact, I don’t think I’ve worked with a major star or hero since then. It’s a huge challenge because, from that point onward, I had to build my career from scratch, working with new directors and carving my own path. It all comes down to the age factor, which makes it even more difficult.”

She also pointed out a deeper issue within Tamil cinema; the absence of veteran filmmakers willing to create strong, woman-centric stories. “Unlike in the past, when directors like K. Balachander crafted powerful narratives around female protagonists, today’s major filmmakers focus primarily on male superstars. We rarely see big-budget films that put women at the forefront,” she explained.

Jyothika further emphasized that this challenge extends beyond age discrimination. “Apart from age, the second major hurdle is the lack of seasoned filmmakers who are willing to tell stories from a woman’s perspective. Women in the industry often face an uphill battle because they are fighting this alone,” she said.
