Panchatheertha Parashakthi Devasthaanam

A beautiful location within the lush greenery of Kerala’s Cheruvally Estate near Erumeli lies Panchatheertha Parashakthi Devasthaanam, a unique and spiritually significant site unlike any conventional temple. Surrounded by dense forests, cascading waterfalls, and sacred streams, this hidden destination offers a rare union of natural beauty and divine presence.

The name “Panchatheertha” translates to “five sacred streams,” reflecting the belief that the site is blessed by the convergence of five holy water sources. According to local tradition, the origins of this sacred land date back to the era of the Mahabharata, when the Pandavas are believed to have passed through the region during their exile. It is widely believed that Lord Krishna invoked the presence of Devi Adi Parashakthi to protect the Pandavas, establishing the spiritual foundation of this sacred site.

Over time, Panchatheertha came to be recognised as a place of divine energy and healing. Astrologer Sree Jayachandra Raj from Changanacherry played a significant role in identifying the site as a “Shiva Gulika” kshetra, a spiritually potent location believed to possess healing properties. His regular visits, especially on Fridays, gradually drew devotees seeking guidance, prayers, and astrological insight.

A turning point in the temple’s modern history occurred during a ritual gathering when a series of unusual events led to a deeper spiritual revelation. Following the unexpected death of a calf offered at the temple, an astrological “prasna” was conducted. During this ritual, an extraordinary phenomenon was witnessed, flames from the sacred lamp rose dramatically like a fountain, astonishing those present.

Through his astrological reading, Sree Jayachandra Raj identified the presence of Devi Adi Parashakthi at a location approximately 1.5 kilometres away. He described, in remarkable detail, a place featuring three-tiered waterfalls, five cascading streams, a large banyan tree, and a secluded dwelling, all of which matched a real, yet unexplored location deep within the forest.

Determined to verify this vision, he led a group through the dense terrain at night, relying solely on astrological guidance. To the amazement of all present, they discovered the exact location as described, including the banyan tree, the waterfalls, and remnants of a dwelling once inhabited by a man known as Markos, who was believed to have worshipped the goddess in solitude.

This discovery strengthened the belief that the site was divinely chosen and that the presence of Devi Adi Parashakthi had long existed there. Following this, rituals were initiated, including the lighting of a sacred lamp to invoke the goddess. The first formal pooja was later conducted on the auspicious day of Makaravilakku, marking the beginning of organised worship at Panchatheertha.

In the years that followed, the temple grew in spiritual importance. Renowned spiritual figure Swami Sathyananda Saraswathy also visited the site and, through his divine insight, declared that Panchatheertha was once a flourishing temple thousands of years ago, later lost to time and now revived once again. He further believed that the site would become a place of hope and refuge for countless devotees.

Today, Panchatheertha remains a place of quiet devotion rather than commercial activity. There are no large crowds or developed facilities, allowing visitors to experience a sense of peace, solitude, and spiritual connection amidst nature. Weekly rituals, especially on Fridays, continue to attract devotees who seek blessings, healing, and guidance.

The temple is accessible via Erumeli, with routes connecting from Kottayam and Changanacherry. However, reaching the site requires a journey through forested paths, making it a destination suited for those seeking both spiritual depth and natural exploration.
