Behind every great success story lies someone who believed in the dream long before it became reality. For Indian cinema’s beloved icon Rajinikanth, that someone is Raj Bahadur - the friend who saw the spark in a bus conductor and encouraged him to chase the spotlight.

Before the glitz, fame, and superstardom, Rajinikanth lived a humble life in Bengaluru, working as a bus conductor for the state transport service. Behind the wheel of that same bus was Raj Bahadur, a dear friend and the first to recognize that Rajinikanth was meant for more than collecting fares and flipping coins.

While Rajinikanth entertained passengers with his signature style, his flair, charisma, and dramatic flair even in simple gestures, Bahadur saw not just a friend but a performer in the making. He didn't just cheer Rajinikanth on from the sidelines; he actively pushed him forward, constantly urging him to consider acting as a career. Even when Rajinikanth doubted his abilities, Raj Bahadur’s belief never wavered.

Their friendship wasn’t just emotional support, it was life-changing. Bahadur went a step further by helping Rajinikanth apply to the prestigious Madras Film Institute, laying the foundation for a journey that would eventually make him a legend in Indian cinema.

Over the years, Rajinikanth has never forgotten the role Raj Bahadur played in shaping his destiny. At every major milestone from film launches to national awards, the Superstar makes it a point to honour his friend. When he was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest honour in cinema, Rajinikanth publicly dedicated it to two people: his mentor K. Balachander, and his friend Raj Bahadur.

“When I was working as a bus conductor, it was Raj Bahadur who first saw the actor in me. He believed in me when I didn’t. That’s why I’m here today,” Rajinikanth once said.

Their story is more than a footnote in cinema history, it's a reminder of the power of belief, friendship, and unwavering support. Raj Bahadur may not be a household name, but his influence echoes in every frame of Rajinikanth’s cinematic journey.

Because sometimes, it only takes one person to believe and the rest, as they say, is history.
