Did you know?

Suryavamsam, one of Tamil cinema’s most memorable family dramas directed by Vikraman and starring Sarathkumar, Devayani, and Priya Raman, could have looked very different. Actress Mohini recently revealed in an interview that the role played by Priya Raman was originally offered to her.

Mohini, who was among the leading heroines of the 90s, was known for her bold yet positive characters in films like Naan Pesa Ninaipathellam and Wet Rose. When director Vikraman approached her for Suryavamsam, she politely refused, explaining that she didn’t want to play a character that betrayed the hero. She even asked if she could take up Devayani’s role instead, but Vikraman told her Devayani had already been finalised.

Speaking about her choice, Mohini said, “I never wanted to play negative roles. If I had done that once, people would keep offering me villain roles. I didn’t want my fans to see me that way.”

Interestingly, Mohini also shared that she was in talks for the heroine’s role in Muthu. Until the very end, it was between her and Meena. But when the director suggested she could push harder for the role, she chose not to. “I felt that if the character was meant for me, it would come to me naturally. In the end, Meena played it beautifully,” she added.

Life took her on a different path, as Mohini later moved to the United States and stepped away from cinema. But even today, fans remember her as one of the most charming and versatile actresses of her time.
