A new tool for verifying eligibility under the upcoming targeted RON95 fuel subsidy has gone viral after a demonstration video was shared on Facebook by Eric See To-Lim Sian See.

The 1-minute, 13-second video, reported by Sinar Harian, shows a training session provided to petrol station operators. In it, the device is seen scanning a user’s MyKad to determine whether they qualify for the subsidised fuel price.

The system works through a simple colour-coded display: a blue screen confirms eligibility, a red screen indicates that the individual has exhausted their subsidy quota, and an error message appears if the customer is not eligible. Operators can then create orders based on the customer’s pump type, verify the fill amount, and issue receipts for payment.

The government has confirmed that the targeted RON95 subsidy will be implemented with a capped price of RM1.99 per litre for eligible Malaysians. Those not qualifying under the scheme will instead pay the full market price, in line with the two-tier pricing mechanism.

However, the viral video does not indicate whether the verification system will be available directly at the pump, or how it will be integrated with oil company applications such as Setel. This raises questions, especially since the Ministry of Finance had previously stated that e-wallets and oil company apps would also be incorporated into the subsidy mechanism.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has meanwhile urged Malaysians to ensure their MyKad chips are functioning properly so they can benefit from the scheme. In a Facebook post, he reminded the public that faulty or unreadable MyKads can be replaced on the same day at any National Registration Department office.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had earlier announced that the initiative, aimed at ensuring subsidies reach only those eligible, will be rolled out by the end of September. He assured that Malaysians meeting the criteria would enjoy the lower RON95 price of RM1.99 per litre once the system is in place.

Saifuddin added that while the rollout took time, the Prime Minister has kept his word: “Every promise made will be delivered.”
