Six Decades, Five Generations, One Living Legacy: TKI's Diamond Jubilee Culminates in Krishnayanam

Six Decades, Five Generations, One Living Legacy: TKI's Diamond Jubilee Culminates in Krishnayanam

After six decades devoted to nurturing dancers, teachers and cultural leaders, "Nattuva Thilagam" Mrs Indira Manikam is preparing to present one of the most personal productions of her life: Krishnayanam: From Birth to Beyond. Presented by Tanjai Kamalaa Indira Dance School (TKI) as the artistic culmination of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the epic Bharathanatyam dance theatre production will be staged at 7.30 pm on Saturday, 22 August 2026, at HGH Convention Centre in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur.

More than 150 performers, musicians and production personnel will bring Krishna's journey from birth to beyond to life through original choreography and lyrics, a cinematic score, theatrical lighting, LED visuals and elaborate costumes. For Indira, who began dancing at the age of two and later co-founded TKI with her sister Kamala in 1966, Krishnayanam is far more than another stage production.

It embodies the values that have sustained the school for 60 years: courage in the face of adversity, responsibility towards others, resilience through change and the conviction that knowledge must be passed on generously to future generations. "I was born into dance, I grew through dance, and I have lived my life through dance. For as long as I draw breath, I want to continue creating, teaching and giving. Krishnayanam is my offering to the generations who came before us, to every student who carried this school forward and to the young people who will inherit its legacy.

If audiences leave the theatre with greater courage, compassion and clarity, then this work will have fulfilled its purpose." - "Nattuva Thilagam" Mrs Indira Manikam, Co-Founder, Principal, Artistic Director And Choreographer Of TKI Krishnayanam: An Epic Told Through Shared Human Values Krishnayanam traces Krishna's life from his birth amid political oppression and his childhood in Gokulam through Kalinga Narthanam and Rasaleela, the defence of Draupadi's dignity, Arjuna's crisis of conscience on the battlefield, the human cost of war, Krishna's final departure and the enduring legacy of his teachings.

Across ten dramatic scenes, the production explores fear and moral leadership, love and belonging, injustice and accountability, duty and doubt, grief and renewal. Conceived for audiences of all backgrounds, the production presents Bharathanatyam as a living form of Malaysian theatre while drawing attention to questions that are deeply human and relevant across cultures. "This is a story about choices: Who speaks up when dignity is violated? How do we act with integrity when every choice is difficult? What remains when power and victory have passed? We want Malaysians from every background to see themselves in these questions and to experience Bharathanatyam in a theatrical form that feels immediate, accessible and emotionally resonant," Indira said.

Indira has received more than 20 arts awards and honours, including six Lifetime Achievement Awards and the prestigious Anugerah Tokoh Seni Budaya Negeri Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur in 2023. Six Decades of Dance and Cultural Service Officially inaugurated on 2 September 1966, TKI began with classes at Thambusamy Pillai Tamil School in Sentul before expanding across the Klang Valley and beyond. Over the decades, Indira has conducted more than 1,000 Salangai Poojas and 69 Arangetrams. Her teaching philosophy has always extended beyond technical mastery.

For Indira, dance should also cultivate discipline, cultural understanding, confidence, character and emotional resilience. She also founded the Malaysia Barathanatya Dance Association in 2007 and served as its first president, strengthening collaboration, professional standards and national visibility for the art form. In 2016, the Malaysia Book of Records recognised TKI as the "Longest Operating Dance Training School" and placed it in its Best of the Nation category. TKI graduates now teach and lead institutions throughout Malaysia and overseas, extending a cultural and artistic lineage that spans five generations.

The scale of Krishnayanam reflects TKI's six-decade tradition of mounting ambitious Bharathanatyam dance dramas. TKI has previously staged 26 major thematic productions, many in support of charitable, educational and community causes. Its landmark production, Sivagamiyin Sabatham, became the first Tamil-language dance drama in the Bharathanatyam genre to be staged at Istana Budaya and received the BOH Cameronian Award for Best Costume Design in 2008. Kannagi: The Wrath of a Chaste Woman, staged at seven locations across Malaysia, received the BOH Cameronian Audience Choice Award in 2014.

A Diamond Jubilee of Homecoming and Recognition TKI’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations began with the official launch of its commemorative logo on 14 March 2026 at the school’s premises. The logo was jointly unveiled by Datuk B. Sahadevan, Managing Director of the National Land Finance Co-operative Society (NLFCS), and Ms Vijayalakshmy Suderrajan, Director of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Indian Cultural Centre (ICCR) in Kuala Lumpur. The celebrations continued with Rathnaanjali on 18 April at Auditorium Muzium Negara.

Conceived as a homecoming, the event brought together about 11 dance schools founded or led by Indira's former students and placed five generations of TKI's artistic lineage on one stage. At the Diamond Jubilee Gala Night on 6 June, a performance by 60 dancers symbolised six decades of artistic service. TKI also honoured the teachers, alumni, Arangetram graduates, volunteers, patrons and partners who contributed to the school's journey.

The gala also marked the launch of the commemorative book The Legacy of Indira Manikam, documenting Indira's artistic journey, TKI's major productions and the school's contribution to the development of Bharathanatyam in Malaysia. Krishnayanam now brings the Diamond Jubilee journey to its conclusion, not by looking back alone, but by transforming six decades of knowledge and experience into a new work for future generations.
