Some deities are traditionally not recommended for home altars due to the intense energies they represent. For example, idols or pictures of Shaniswaran are generally advised to be worshipped only in temples. Similarly, images of Rahu and Ketu are usually avoided at home, as their energies are considered more suitable for temple worship or specific rituals done by trained priests.
There are also common questions about keeping Ayyappan or Anjaneyar (Hanuman) at home. According to Mangai Karasi, it is perfectly fine to place them in the altar, as long as the space is clean, and they are worshipped with devotion.

Another point often discussed is whether ancestor photos should be kept in the same room as the pooja altar. Some people place them together, but this can create a feeling of worshipping ancestors like deities. It is generally better to keep ancestor photos in a separate space, where prayers and blessings can be offered respectfully without mixing them with deity worship.
