The alleged abuse of a Year Six student in Bayan Lepas came to light when a school counselling teacher discovered bruises and cuts on the child’s back. The 12-year-old gilr later revealed that he had previously been locked in a dog cage by his own parents. Barat Daya District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam, confirmed that a police report was lodged by the school’s headmaster on Wednesday after the discovery.

“Following the report, police arrested both parents, aged 49 and 47. The couple, who work as programme managers and engineers at two separate factories, do not have any prior criminal records,” he said. Preliminary investigations revealed that the child was caned on his back last Sunday after allegedly placing food inside a wardrobe. The incident occurred at their condominium residence in Sungai Ara.

“The counselling teacher noticed the student in pain and upon conducting a physical check, found signs of physical abuse. The headmaster was then informed and subsequently lodged a report,” said Sazalee. The girl, who is the couple’s second child, also told authorities that he had frequently been subjected to beatings and had been locked inside a dog cage approximately two years ago.

The child is currently receiving treatment at Penang Hospital. Officers from the Social Welfare Department have since visited him. Police also seized a cane from the family’s home as part of their investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for child abuse.
