Malaysia is set to introduce a redesigned Malaysian International Passport (PMA) beginning June 1, 2026, featuring a major upgrade in security technology aimed at strengthening protection against forgery and identity fraud.

The initiative, led by the Immigration Department of Malaysia, marks one of the most significant security enhancements ever introduced to the country’s official travel document. While the passport will carry a refreshed appearance, authorities say the biggest transformation lies within its advanced security framework.

Under the new upgrade, the Malaysian passport will now contain 94 security features, a sharp increase from the 49 features found in the current version. The improvements are designed to make the passport significantly more difficult to duplicate, alter or misuse.

Among the newly introduced technologies are next-generation holograms, ultraviolet (UV) printing elements, hidden visual markings visible only under specific conditions, as well as forensic-grade security components developed to prevent counterfeiting.

The passport booklet itself has also been reinforced with enhanced stitching threads and upgraded structural elements to improve durability and allow easier authenticity verification during border inspections.

According to the Immigration Department, the enhanced passport aims to strengthen identity protection, reduce document fraud and maintain international confidence in Malaysian travel documents while ensuring smoother immigration clearance processes worldwide.

The rollout of the new passport will begin gradually from June 1, 2026, at selected locations including the Immigration Headquarters in Putrajaya, the Kuala Lumpur Passport Office in Jalan Duta, UTC Wangsa Maju and the Immigration Office in Shah Alam. Nationwide implementation is expected by July 2026.

Applications for the upgraded passport can be submitted online through the Immigration Department’s official platform, subject to appointment availability at participating offices.

Authorities have also reminded applicants to submit only authentic and unedited passport photographs. The use of AI-generated or digitally altered images is strictly prohibited, and immigration officers have been trained to detect manipulated submissions. Applications that fail to comply with the guidelines may be rejected.

Despite the introduction of the new passport, Malaysians are not required to replace their existing passports immediately. Current passports with more than six months’ validity will continue to remain valid until their expiry date.

The Immigration Department stated that the overall objective of the upgrade is to further strengthen passport security, combat forgery and ensure Malaysian travel documents continue to meet international standards.
