Chef Damu’s journey from the humble beginnings of a hotel kitchen to becoming one of India’s most respected culinary figures is a powerful reminder that great achievements often begin with small steps.

The veteran chef, whose real name was K. Damodharan, passed away in Chennai on Sunday, October 25, at the age of 72, following a period of ill health. Best known to television audiences as the warm and familiar judge of the popular Tamil cooking show Cooku with Comali, he leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond the kitchen.

A recipient of the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, Chef Damu earned recognition for his contributions to the culinary arts, culinary education and the promotion of Tamil cuisine. For many viewers, however, he was more than an accomplished chef. His approachable personality and reassuring presence on television earned him the affectionate nickname “Damu Appa”.

As tributes pour in, here are five facts about the remarkable life and career of Chef Damu.

1. He began his journey with humble beginnings in the kitchen

Long before he became a household name, Chef Damu worked his way up through the demanding environment of professional kitchens. His early responsibilities included washing dishes and chopping vegetables, giving him first-hand experience of the hard work that goes into preparing a meal.

Rather than allowing these humble beginnings to define his limits, he used them as an opportunity to learn. Through dedication, discipline and a willingness to understand every aspect of the kitchen, he steadily built his knowledge and skills.

2. He combined culinary passion with academic excellence

Chef Damu’s achievements were not limited to his practical skills. He also pursued formal education in hospitality and management, earning a diploma in Hotel Management and Catering Technology from the Institute of Hotel Management in Chennai.

He went on to obtain a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Madurai Kamaraj University and an MBA from the University of Madras. He also pursued further professional qualifications and studies related to hospitality management.

In 2004, he received a PhD in Hotel Management and Catering Technology from the University of Madras, earning recognition as the first Indian chef to achieve a doctorate in the discipline.

3. He made history by cooking 617 dishes in a record-breaking marathon

In December 2010, Chef Damu achieved an extraordinary milestone by cooking continuously for 24 hours, 30 minutes and 12 seconds.

During the marathon, he prepared 617 dishes weighing approximately 190kg, earning a place in the Guinness World Records for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.

The feat demanded not only culinary skill but also remarkable concentration, stamina and determination. It became one of the defining achievements of his career, demonstrating the dedication he brought to his craft.

For Chef Damu, cooking was more than a profession. It was a lifelong pursuit that continued to challenge him to explore what was possible.

4. He brought cooking closer to audiences through television

While his accomplishments in professional kitchens earned him respect within the culinary industry, television introduced Chef Damu to a much wider audience.

He appeared in cooking programmes across several Tamil television channels, including Raj TV, Pothigai, Jaya TV and Vijay TV, over a career spanning more than two decades.

His popularity reached another level through Cooku with Comali, where he became a familiar and much-loved presence among contestants and viewers. The show’s combination of cooking challenges and comedy allowed audiences to see a different side of the accomplished chef.

5. He shared his knowledge and helped shape future generations

Beyond television appearances and record-breaking achievements, Chef Damu made significant contributions to culinary education. He served in academic leadership roles at hotel management institutions in Chennai, helping train students who hoped to build careers in the hospitality industry.

He also authored several cookbooks for home cooks, featuring more than 2,700 recipes, alongside books intended for catering students. One of his best-known titles was Damu’s Home Free Style Cook.

His contributions extended to public initiatives as well. In 2008 and 2011, he contributed to Tamil Nadu’s midday meal programme by introducing rice dishes and egg preparations intended for schoolchildren.

In 2025, his contribution to the culinary arts was recognised with the Padma Shri, marking another major milestone in a career shaped by years of dedication.

Chef Damu’s life was a story of steady progress, lifelong learning and a deep commitment to his craft. From taking on the most basic tasks in hotel kitchens to becoming a celebrated chef, educator, author and television personality, he showed how determination can transform a humble beginning into an extraordinary career.

His influence will also be remembered through the students he mentored, the recipes he shared, the culinary traditions he helped popularise and the countless viewers who welcomed him into their homes through television.

Although Chef Damu is no longer with us, the lessons behind his journey remain: success takes time, every experience can teach us something, and true achievement lies not only in what we accomplish, but also in what we pass on to others.
