MediAsas : Malaysia Introduces Medical Plan Starting From RM60 Monthly

Private healthcare has become increasingly expensive over the years, leaving many Malaysians wondering if quality medical treatment is still within reach. In a move to make healthcare more accessible, the government has officially introduced MediAsas, a new medical insurance and takaful scheme designed to provide affordable private healthcare coverage.

The Joint Ministerial Committee on Private Healthcare Costs (JBMKKS) recently confirmed MediAsas as the official brand name for what was previously known as the Base MHIT Plan. The initiative forms part of the government's broader effort to improve access to medical protection while keeping healthcare costs sustainable for the future.

Before its nationwide launch in January 2027, MediAsas will undergo a pilot programme in the Klang Valley beginning at the end of July and continuing until October 2026. The pilot phase is intended to fine-tune the programme and ensure Malaysians enjoy a smoother experience once it is rolled out across the country.

The plan will be offered as a standalone medical insurance and takaful product, giving consumers more flexibility without requiring additional insurance packages.

MediAsas will be available in two options:

• MediAsas Teras – a standard medical protection plan.
• MediAsas Fleksi – an enhanced version offering additional benefits beyond the standard package.

One of the key highlights of the programme is its broad eligibility. 

• You may volunteer 

• Entry age up to 70 years old

• Coverage up to 85 years old

• Costs RM60 to RM550 per month

• Pilot program begins in Klang Valley by end of July 

• Nationwide implementation by Jan 2027

Six major insurance and takaful providers will participate in the pilot programme:

• AIA Berhad
• Allianz Life Insurance Malaysia Berhad
• Great Eastern Life Assurance (Malaysia) Berhad
• Prudential BSN Takaful Berhad
• Etiqa Family Takaful Berhad
• Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Keluarga Berhad

For many Malaysians, affordability will be the biggest question. According to JBMKKS, estimated monthly premiums are expected to range between RM60 and RM550 for individuals joining the plan before the age of 70. The estimates are based on current medical claims data and projected healthcare cost inflation.

However, these are still indicative figures. The final premium rates will only be confirmed closer to the nationwide rollout in January 2027.

Minister of Finance II, Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, said MediAsas is designed to extend medical protection to more Malaysians while ensuring healthcare financing remains sustainable over the long term.

He explained that the programme is intended to create a stronger foundation for future healthcare reforms by widening eligibility and introducing features that keep medical coverage affordable over time.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the initiative goes hand in hand with broader healthcare reforms, including the gradual implementation of the Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRG) payment system in private hospitals.

According to him, these measures will help manage rising healthcare costs, encourage value-based care, and strengthen public confidence in Malaysia's healthcare system.

If the pilot programme proves successful, MediAsas is expected to become available nationwide in January 2027, offering Malaysians another option for affordable private healthcare coverage without compromising on quality.

As medical costs continue to rise, MediAsas could mark an important step towards making private healthcare more accessible, giving more Malaysians the confidence that quality treatment remains within financial reach.
