Mistaken Bank Transfer? Here's How You Can Try to Get Your Money Back

Accidentally transferring money to the wrong bank account can be a stressful experience, especially when it involves a large amount. While it may seem impossible to recover your funds, there are several steps you can take to improve your chances of getting your money back.

Here's what you should do if you make a mistaken bank transfer:

1. Check the transaction status

If the account number you entered is invalid or does not exist, the transaction will usually fail and the money will automatically be returned to your account within one or two working days. You can also contact your bank to confirm the status of the transaction.

However, if the transfer was successful and the money has been credited to another person's account, you'll need to act quickly.

2. Lodge police report immediately

Visit the nearest police station and explain that you accidentally transferred money to the wrong bank account. Be sure to include important details such as:

  • The recipient's bank account number
  • The bank involved
  • The recipient's name (if available)
  • The amount transferred
  • The date and time of the transaction
  • The banking app or transfer method used

3. Inform your bank

Bring your police report to the nearest branch of your bank and explain the situation to a bank officer. The bank will then begin the process of contacting the recipient's bank and account holder.

Avoid contacting the recipient directly, as banks generally advise against doing so due to privacy concerns.

4. The recipient must agree to return the money

If the recipient acknowledges the mistake and agrees to return the funds, the bank will guide both parties through the necessary procedures before the money is transferred back to you.

5. What if the recipient refuses?

If the account holder refuses to return the money, legal action may be necessary.

According to CompareHero, if the amount involved exceeds RM5,000 and the recipient has no legal right to keep the funds or ignores requests from the bank or police, you may engage a lawyer to issue a Letter of Demand and pursue further legal action.

For amounts below RM5,000, you can file a claim through the Small Claims Procedure at your nearest Magistrate's Court without hiring a lawyer.

The best way to avoid this situation is to double-check the recipient's name, account number and transfer amount before confirming any online banking transaction.
