Stadium Merdeka Was Built in Less Than a Year? Here Are 7 Things You May Not Know

For many Malaysians, Stadium Merdeka is more than just a stadium. It is a place that carries memories of one of the most important moments in the country’s history.

On 31 August 1957, thousands gathered at the stadium to witness Tunku Abdul Rahman proclaim Malaya’s independence. Since then, the iconic landmark has continued to be part of many important chapters in the nation’s story.

As Malaysia celebrates 69 years of independence, here are seven interesting facts about Stadium Merdeka that might surprise you.

1. It was built in less than a year

Imagine building an entire stadium in less than 12 months. That was exactly what happened with Stadium Merdeka. Designed by American architect and engineer Tan Sri Stanley Edward Jewkes, construction began on 25 September 1956. Despite the tight deadline, the stadium was completed on 21 August 1957, just 10 days before the historic independence ceremony.

2. Construction started before the full design was ready

The race against time was so intense that construction began even before the entire stadium design had been completed.

Retired civil engineer Lee Kwok Thye recalled that Jewkes would work on the stadium plans after completing his duties during the day. Some parts of the design were developed as construction progressed. It was truly a project where there was little room for delay.

3. The original budget was not enough

The stadium was initially estimated to cost around 2.3 million Malayan dollars, equivalent to about RM14.6 million today.

With money being tight, the team had to find practical ways to keep construction costs under control. Imported steel was avoided in favour of locally sourced materials, while manual labour was heavily relied upon.

4. Many of the workers were young women

Almost 1,000 workers from different backgrounds helped build the stadium. Among them were young women who took on physically demanding tasks at the construction site. They helped prepare and carry concrete, often working long hours under difficult conditions.

Their contribution may not be widely remembered today, but they were part of the workforce that helped make the historic stadium a reality.

5. It once held two world records

When Stadium Merdeka was completed, it was no ordinary stadium. It held two world records at the time, for its 120-foot prestressed floodlight towers and its large cantilever concrete shell roof. The stadium was also recognised as the largest stadium in Southeast Asia when it was completed.

6. It witnessed some of Malaysia’s most important moments

Of course, the most famous moment came on 31 August 1957, when Tunku Abdul Rahman declared Malaya’s independence. But the stadium witnessed another major milestone six years later, when the Proclamation of Malaysia took place there on 16 September 1963.

During the 13 May 1969 racial riots, the stadium also became a place of refuge for many Malaysians.

7. Muhammad Ali once fought here

Here’s one fact that may surprise you, one of the greatest boxers in history once stepped into the ring at Stadium Merdeka. On 30 June 1975, Muhammad Ali faced Joe Bugner in front of more than 22,000 spectators. Ali went on to defeat Bugner and successfully retained his world heavyweight title.

From the moment independence was declared to major sporting events and defining moments in Malaysian history, Stadium Merdeka has witnessed it all.

It is not a stadium; it is a place where pieces of Malaysia’s history were made.
