"I never imagined that one day I would be discussing global issues with young leaders from around the world. That moment reminded me that no dream is too big when you're willing to work for it." - Tebenraj Segar
Representing your country is a dream many young people hold close to their hearts. For Tebenraj Segar, that dream became reality when he was selected to represent Melaka and Malaysia at the KAU International Summer School 2026 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration (International Business) at Open University Malaysia (OUM), Melaka Learning Centre, Tebenraj's journey is more than an academic achievement.
When the email confirming his selection arrived, Tebenraj could hardly believe it.
"It was one of the proudest moments of my life. I wasn't just travelling overseas for an academic programme; I was carrying the name of Melaka and Malaysia onto an international stage."
For him, the opportunity symbolised years of hard work and persistence.

"I come from an ordinary background, so this was proof that if you keep putting yourself forward and never stop trying, opportunities will eventually find you. That moment changed the way I looked at my own potential."
Among participants from various countries, Tebenraj was the only Malaysian Indian delegate. Rather than seeing that as pressure, he embraced it as a privilege.
"I wasn't only representing myself. I was representing Malaysia's diversity and showing that Malaysian Indian youths belong on global platforms too."
The biggest challenge wasn't language, it was learning to understand different cultures, perspectives and communication styles.
"Everyone approached discussions differently because of their backgrounds. But I quickly realised that when people listen with respect and keep an open mind, differences become opportunities to learn instead of barriers."
Those conversations, he says, became one of the most rewarding parts of the programme.

The summer school wasn't simply about lectures or academic discussions. It became a lesson in leadership, diplomacy and preparing for a rapidly changing world. One lesson stood out above all.
"Diplomacy begins with listening. Before trying to be understood, you first need to understand others."
There is no denying that the programme also reshaped his understanding of leadership.
"Leadership isn't about standing in front of everyone. It's about bringing people together, empowering them and working towards a common goal."
"Technology is reshaping education, governance and international cooperation. As future leaders, we have to embrace innovation while making sure it creates positive change for society."
Beyond the classroom, Kazakhstan offered experiences that will stay with him for years. Meeting students from different countries showed him that despite cultural differences, many young people share similar dreams.
"We all wanted to make a difference in our communities. That common purpose brought us together."
Exploring Kazakhstan's breathtaking landscapes, rich history and warm hospitality added another layer to the experience.

"I realised that travelling isn't only about seeing new places. It's about building friendships, understanding different cultures and returning home with a broader perspective."
One of the most meaningful moments came during the programme's gala dinner. Tebenraj proudly wore traditional Indian attire and performed a dance to an Indian song, sharing a piece of his heritage with participants from around the world.
"It was incredibly meaningful because I wasn't only representing Malaysia, I was also showcasing the beauty and richness of Indian culture."
Watching participants appreciate the performance reminded him that cultural exchange creates connections that words alone sometimes cannot.
"Our differences become our greatest strength when we choose to share them."
Many students believe international opportunities are reserved for those with exceptional backgrounds or endless resources. Tebenraj hopes his story proves otherwise.
"Never underestimate yourself."
"You don't need to come from a privileged background to represent your country. What matters is your willingness to learn, your determination to keep applying and your courage to step outside your comfort zone."
He admits there will always be rejection and moments of self-doubt.

"But every application teaches you something. Every experience helps you grow. Don't let temporary setbacks convince you to give up on long-term dreams." His message is especially meaningful for Malaysian Indian youths.
"I hope more young people embrace their identity with pride, believe in their abilities and never think international opportunities are beyond their reach."
Kazakhstan is only the latest chapter in Tebenraj's growing international journey. From BINAR 2025 in Indonesia to GSLS 2026 with the University of Tsukuba in Japan, PIJAR 2026 in Indonesia, and now the KAU International Summer School 2026 in Kazakhstan, every programme has helped shape him into a more confident global citizen.
"This journey doesn't end here. Every international programme is another opportunity to proudly carry the name of Melaka, Malaysia and the Malaysian Indian community."
Behind every milestone, Tebenraj credits the unwavering support of his family.
"My parents and family have been my greatest source of strength. Their sacrifices, encouragement and belief in me made every opportunity possible."
As he looks towards the future, his goal extends beyond collecting achievements. He hopes to inspire more Malaysian youths to dream beyond borders, embrace every opportunity and proudly represent Malaysia wherever life takes them.
"No matter where you come from, determination, perseverance and the support of those who believe in you can take you further than you ever imagined. Dream big, work hard and never be afraid to carry Malaysia's name onto the world stage."
