From a Wedding Meal to a Viral Controversy: How Trust Became the Real Issue?

From a Wedding Meal to a Viral Controversy: How Trust Became the Real Issue?

What began as a simple apology over a meal at a wedding has quickly turned into one of social media's most talked-about controversies. A Malaysian wedding photographer, known on Threads as akuhavoc_, publicly admitted that he had eaten food at a client's wedding reception without being invited or given permission.

The incident took place during the wedding of Haziq and Safia on July 19. In his apology, the photographer took full responsibility for his actions. He acknowledged that what he did was wrong, apologised to the couple, and confirmed that he had compensated them as requested.

He deliberately chose not to reveal the couple's identities and hoped the incident would serve as a reminder for photographers and videographers to remain professional while on duty. For many, the apology appeared sincere. However, the situation took an unexpected turn just hours later.

While the apology was still circulating online, a promotional video from the photographer's account appeared on social media.

According to him, the video had been scheduled in advance as part of his regular posting routine and was published automatically. Once he realised how it looked, he removed the post and admitted that the timing was inappropriate.

Despite the explanation, many social media users felt the promotional content overshadowed the apology.

Several questioned whether he was genuinely remorseful, with some accusing him of using the controversy to attract attention to his account.

The criticism didn't stop there. Many users also pointed out that the photographer had previously built his online presence around ragebait content, posts intentionally designed to provoke reactions and increase engagement.

As a result, some felt it was difficult to distinguish between a genuine apology and another attempt to generate online attention.

In fact, the photographer himself acknowledged this perception. He admitted that because he had often shared ragebait content in the past, many people now struggled to believe him when something real happened.

That admission resonated with many observers, highlighting how credibility can become difficult to rebuild once trust has been lost. By the following day, the photographer confirmed that the original post had been removed as promised.

He reiterated that his apology was sincere and not intended to gain sympathy or publicity. Saying he had learned from the experience, he concluded his statement by placing the matter in God's hands.

Yet the incident has since evolved into something much bigger than a dispute over a meal. For many online, it has become a conversation about accountability, authenticity and how quickly public opinion can shape a person's reputation.

Sometimes, the biggest lesson isn't the mistake itself, but how difficult it can be to regain trust once the internet has already made up its mind.
